Thought to originate in South Central Mexico, the avocado (Persea americana) falls under the Lauraceae flowering plant family. It is also suspected to have been present in Peru as far back as 15,000 years ago. The avocado is also known as the Alligator Pear. This is largely due to the fruit’s green bumpy-skinned pear-shape – although some avocados are also egg-shaped or spherical.Interestingly, the tree’s fruit is a large berry, which contains a single large seed.

They can help prevent cancer and relieve symptoms of arthritis. They are also known to help with weight loss (as part of a balanced diet) and can lower cholesterol.
